Bee Kiean

Speech Therapist

Bee Kiean graduated from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology and started working in Singapore General Hospital. It was there where she developed a passion in treating people with swallowing problem or dysphagia, particularly the oncology patients. She was appointed as one of the surgical oncology team leader. She worked very closely in outpatient clinics with the General Surgeons in the National Cancer Centre, and the Prosthodontists in the National Dental Centre. These are highly specialised clinics conducted to treat patients with speech and swallowing difficulties after cancer treatments. Bee Kiean also participated in the setting up of the first Speech Therapy clinic in the Department of Radiation Oncology in National Cancer Centre. She was involved in tumour board meetings and ward rounds meetings which allowed her to participate actively in the planning of treatment intervention with the Doctors. It also allowed her to learn and further her specialisation in dysphagia management of these patients who underwent surgical and oncology treatments. As a result of her clinical expertise and experience, she was invited to be a speaker for the inaugural ‘International Surgical Oncology Conference’ organised by National Cancer Centre in Singapore in 2012.

Bee Kiean’s clinical experience in dysphagia management is not limited to surgical oncology, but across all medical divisions. In 2008, Bee Kiean was also invited to present at the 8th Singapore Stroke Conference. For Bee Kiean, helping the adult patients is something extremely personal and close to her heart. Having treated and managed a large number of patients, Bee Kiean understands the difficulties, pain and stress of the patients and their caregivers. She continues to pursue her professional learning in Speech Therapy to ensure that her patients get the best possible care. She was awarded the excellent service award by Singapore General Hospital twice and was a committee member for Professional Standards in the Speech-Language and Hearing Association Singapore in 2008.

Bee Kiean is trained in advanced skills in the management of dysphagia such as videofluoroscopy, FEES (Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) and  tracheostomy management. She was also heavily involved as a clinical educator to Speech Therapy students, Therapist Assistants and other Speech Therapists for these specialised skills. Other than training within the department, Bee Kiean also conducts dysphagia training workshops to coach nurses and other external health care workers in Singapore.

Other than being trained to see adults with dysphagia, Bee Kiean continues to further her clinical knowledge to Paediatrics feeding. She has attended training in SOS Approach (Sequential Oral Sensory Approach to Feeding), as well as Feeding Therapy: A Sensory Motor Approach.

Bee Kiean’s relentless pursuit of clinical knowledge is a testament to her as a clinician. She seeks to improve patient care, ensure clinical and evidence-base practices for the best treatment outcome.

What patients say

Eugene, patient

Bee Kiean saw me for swallowing therapy and saw me through a very difficult time. She is experienced and was able to tailor the therapy according to address the specific issues that I had. However, what made her a cut above the rest was her ability to empathize and feel for her patient. The therapy was not just confined to one hour blocks but consistent emotional and psychological support. This made me feel that the decisions that she made for me during this journey was something that she would have done for her own family members and not just another patient. Thank you very much!
