Sri Devi Mageandran
Speech Therapist
Devi is a fully registered Speech Therapist under the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) and a member of Speech and Language Therapists in Singapore (SALTS). She graduated from La Trobe University, Australia in 2008 with a Bachelors in Speech Pathology (First-class Honours).
Devi previously worked at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) for 10 years. She assessed and managed speech, language, voice and fluency (i.e., stuttering) disorders in toddlers, pre-schoolers, school-aged children and teenagers.
As a principal speech therapist, she worked closely with doctors and other professionals like occupational therapists and psychologists in a multi-disciplinary setting to provide holistic care. In addition to working with children, Devi was a clinical educator for speech therapy students and colleagues. She has also conducted workshops and coached parents of children with language delay to equip them with skills to facilitate their child’s development.
Devi has experience in working with children with voice disorders. She is intrigued by the voice box (i.e., larynx) and its intricate mechanism yet delicate nature. Children may commonly present with a hoarse voice due to behaviours such as shouting. She works with families to help children reduce such behaviours while teaching child-friendly techniques to produce an easier voice.
Devi has also helped to manage stuttering in children by working closely with their families. She recognizes the psychological and social impact of stuttering, such as bullying and low self-esteem. She communicates with teachers to facilitate better participation in school activities that might seem daunting, such as oral presentations and tests.
Devi is trained in Orofacial myofunctional therapy to help children who are facing articulation or breathing difficulties due to tongue tie or low tongue rest posture. These may include speaking with tongue between front teeth for sounds for sounds such as ‘s’, ‘z’, ‘t‘, ‘d’, ‘l’ and ‘n’, difficulties articulating sounds at the back of the mouth such as ‘k’ or ‘g’ and mouth breathing. She believes in the importance of early education and training of oral and facial muscles so as to achieve optimal oral posture (i.e., tongue up and lips closed) to facilitate optimal functioning.
Being a mother herself, and having journeyed with families as their child developed, she understands the challenges of parenting and strongly believes in empowering parents to facilitate their child’s speech and language development. In recognition of her service, Devi has won multiple awards, including Service From The Heart, Singapore Health Quality Service Award (Gold) and Singapore Healthcare Service Quality Award (Team).
