COURSE CONTENT

Responsive feeding therapy is an attachment-based model that supports a child’s autonomy, relationship, and competence with feeding. Therapists will be taught the Responsive Feeding House Model developed by Valerie Gent and Debbie Alvarez who combined have over forty years’ experience treating children with feeding difficulties. This three-day comprehensive workshop is suited for beginner to advance therapists working with children from 2 – 16 years with feeding difficulties including PFD and ARFID as well as autistic children with feeding differences. Three days filled with case studies, videos, knowledge sharing, and discussion.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Build your knowledge on Responsive Feeding therapy.
  2. Increase your confidence with feeding assessment (2-12 years)
  3. Understand how to individualise your feeding therapy for autistic children and sensory eaters with feeding differences.
  4. Understand how to help anxious eaters/children with ARFID.
  5. Build your confidence when working with caregivers of children with PFD using a trauma informed lens.

 

COURSE OUTLINE

    Participants will be able…

    Day 1:

    • To understand what Responsive Feeding is and why it is so important in our work.

    • To feel confident in undertaking a feeding assessment in children (2 – 12 years).

    • To understand chewing development in older children (2 years and up) and why it’s important to assess these skills in paediatric feeding.

    • To gain an understanding of neurodiversity affirming feeding practices and its application in your caseload.

    Day 2:

    • To understand what the Responsive Feeding House Model is and how it can be applied to your caseload.

    • To develop your knowledge on how to increase a child’s food variety (2 -12 years).

    • To understand how to apply responsive feeding strategies in fussy eaters.

    • To understand how to apply responsive feeding strategies in restricted eaters/children with paediatric feeding disorders (PFD).

    Day 3:

    • To gain knowledge on how to use a trauma informed lense in feeding therapy.

    • To understand how to support sensory eaters.

    • To develop skills in supporting feeding differences in autistic children.

    • To understand how to support anxious eaters/children with ARFID.

     

    SPEAKERS’ PROFILE

    Debra Alvarez (Speech Pathologist)

    Debbie is a speech pathologist with 20 years’ experience supporting babies and children with feeding difficulties. She has worked in acute hospital settings including St George and Sydney Children’s Hospital, where she met and worked with Val. Debbie is the owner of ‘Feeding Kids Sydney’, a private practice in Southern Sydney that supports families having difficulty with breast and bottle feeding, the introduction to solids, fussy and restricted eating, as well as children with a disability who require dysphagia management and tube feeding. Debbie uses responsive feeding techniques in her practice and has, together with Val, developed the Responsive Feeding House Model under their joint business ‘Feeding Therapy Australia’. She currently mentors therapists around Australia and has presented both in Australia and internationally.

     

    Valerie Gent (Speech Pathologist)

    Val is a speech pathologist who has worked in paediatric feeding difficulties for 20 years. She has experience both in acute and disability healthcare models and currently owns ‘Let’s Eat! Feeding Therapy’, a dedicated paediatric feeding private practice in Newcastle. Val has published a kid’s book “I’m NOT Hungry for My Dinner” using the Satter Division of Responsibility principles which received the Ellyn Satter Institute (ESI) seal of approval and was shortlisted for the Speech Pathology Australia ‘Book of the Year’ awards in 2022. She also completed her Master of Medical Research at Griffith University in 2023 examining ‘The impact of feeding difficulties on the participation of primary school aged autistic children and their families’ and was given the ‘Award of Excellence in a Research Thesis’. Val currently presents with Debbie under their company, ‘Feeding Therapy Australia’ and has started her PhD at The University of Queensland exploring responsive feeding therapy in 2024.
